Whispering Treasures is a literary anthology. The texts depict a picture of a changing society, where ones has to cope with modernization and pressure from the main society on the hand; and a reality kept alive by a rich oral tradition based on myths and magic.
Kirste Paltto, the mother of the Sami short story, contributes with two short stories, Stolen and Looking Back. Stolen is a story about the loss of a chest with treasured and magical objects that have helped the main character master her daily life after her husband's death. Also Looking Back tells the story of a woman who has lost her husband. Instead of sorrow she feels freedom.
In her short story Then and Now Sara Margrethe Oskal pictures the social ranking in Sami society. The plot deals with love and a proposal ending unexpectedly.
In the extracts from Kerttu Vuolab’s fairytale novel Bårbmoåirras the realistic and mythical world meet.
The extracts from the biographical novel The reindeer Track Ends at the River Bank by Jovnna -Ånde Vest lead us back to the real world and depict the arrival of the new time in Såpmi. This theme is carried on in Inga Ravna Eira’s poems from Mother Cried Over My Skirts which address the realities of living in two societies at the same time.
